A Barbie doll dressed in an Asian outfit is on display in Barbie giant store in Shanghai, China, on March 6, 2009. Shanghai now boasts the world's biggest Barbie store after its six-storey pink palace opened on March 6. The $A44 million store's opening coincides with Barbie's 50th birthday. The doll's makers, Mattel, insist it will capture the imagination not just of young girls but of Chinese women of all ages, with more than 1600 products for sale. For younger girls, the store offers a catwalk on which they can model Barbie-esque clothes and assistants to teach them how to sing and dance to the Barbie Girl song. The Shanghai store is a crucial step in Mattels efforts to make China the number one market for Barbie dolls, while Chinese sales currently account for about 2.5 per cent of global sales.
